Dual Recovery

Recognizing that a gap existed in Massachusetts community peer supports for those who have both an addiction and a mental illness, members of MCC Clubhouses discovered Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA) and took action to bring DRA meetings to Massachusetts. DRA is a member-led, twelve step fellowship that supports individuals recovering from mental illness and alcohol and other drug addictions and substance abuse issues. Seven years ago, the MCC partnered with the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership (MBHP) to expand dual recovery meetings. MBHP now provides fiscal support that enables the MCC to provide dual recovery education and support as well as technical assistance and outreach to consumers who are member of Clubhouses in Massachusetts. The success has been significant and there are now 36 DRA groups and substance awareness meetings in Massachusetts, an accomplishment of which the MCC is very proud.

The MCC Dual Recovery Committee holds monthly meetings for leaders, participants, and supporters of these groups to give and receive education and support, to build relationships, and to enhance and enrich their groups. In addition, each month members and staff from the MCC Dual Recovery Committee provide outreach to meetings in the form of phone calls and visits upon request. The Project organizes an annual Dual Recovery Retreat each spring for those taking leadership in their dual recovery meetings. The retreat is an opportunity to train peer leaders, to receive peer support and to provide technical assistance to strengthen existing meetings and to develop new ones. It also provides an opportunity to educate those who would like to support this growing peer 12-step movement.
